Abstract:
Of all the omissions in the Irish entomological literature, the absence of a formal list of all the Irish Lepidoptera was perhaps the most surprising. An annotated checklist of the Irish butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera) covers species known to have been native or naturalised in Ireland and therefore includes several now thought to be extinct. Migrant species are also noted. Subspecies are given when known. These taxa have a greater importance in the Lepidoptera than in other orders. The checklist contains information on 1412 species. The layout specifies Suborder, Superfamily, Family, Subfamily, Genus, Species. A glossary of the technical terms used in the text is also given. The checklist was updated in 2012 in an article in the Bulletin of the Irish Biogeographical Society. For completeness, this update is included with the PDF of the book.
