The extent to which Irish academic librarians are engaged in publishing in the professional press is considered. This study is an attempt to put the research output of academic librarians on a firm evidence-based footing. A second and equally important research objective was to establish what actually motivates library staff to submit for written publication and concomitantly what barriers, perceived or real, inhibit library staff from doing this.en
