Abstract:
This is the fifth lecture in the course Water Technology dealing with wastewater basics. This is a PowerPoint lecture which is free to use and modify. It was designed to be used in conjunction with the course text Gray, N.F. (2017) Water Science and Technology: An Introduction, published by CRC Press, Oxford. In the lecture the following are explored: Chemical and physical characteristics of wastewater (sewage); analysis of wastewater; descriptive parameters; solids fraction of domestic sewage; COD fractions; basis of modelling; C:N:P ratio; odours and wastewaters; sugar beet processing; odour number; why wastewaters need to be treated; sewerage; combined and separate sewers; infiltration and runoff; urban drainage; combined sewer overflows; roadside gully pots; animal wastes; industrial wastewaters.
