Abstract:
Unwanted sound from cooling fans has been a
significant obstacle that limits the performance of data center
Hard Disk Drive (HDD) storage systems. Acoustic metamaterials
(AM) can be a solution to this problem. AM’s can be custom-
designed to address specific tonal frequencies that the HDD’s are
most vulnerable to. This paper focuses on using a 3D printed
annular AM treatment that can be easily attached to the inlet or
outlet of an axial fan. Initial design optimization was conducted
using the Finite Element Method. Final 3D printed AM geometry
was tested experimentally with a fan that is commonly used in
a data center storage system. Results indicate a 10.8 dB noise
reduction at the targeted tone and a significant reduction in its
harmonics.
