Abstract:
The function of education in Chinese society is essential. Having access to higher education is crucial. Gaokao, the most comprehensive and fierce test, is a major strategy for people to realize their potential and gain an edge in future job seeking. Gaokao has far exceeded its educational mandate and has contributed to many societal issues across the country. Even after students have passed Gaokao and get admitted to college/university, the long-standing impact of test-oriented education on students remains. Thus, the purpose of this research is to explore college students’ experience of the Chinese education system, so as to offer insights to the involved parties in students’ education.
I applied a mixed method of both a qualitative and quantitative approach to conduct the research. A questionnaire was designed and it contained 27 questions about college students’ own experiences of the education system, their interest and motivations in education, the role of their parents, and their relationship with their teachers in the context of their educational experience. I used purposive sampling first to choose the undergraduates who wanted to further their studies aboard. Then I used snowball sampling, having them forward those questions to their classmates or friends.
The findings of this research indicate that college students’ learning motivation, parent-child relationship and teacher-student relationship are all affected by the test-oriented education system. Some respondents believe that their creative thinking, critical thinking, value, and mental health have been affected to varying degrees. This survey also found that some parents could become close and trusted friends with their children, while some were estranged or obligatory relationships with the children. When it came to the teachers, most of them focused on delivering knowledge.
What influences on college students brought by the test-oriented education system were explored. As students used to concentrate on improving their scores, they had trouble in studying more effectively, pursuing their interests or planning for the future after they go to college/university. Even while some parents place their children’s health and happiness first, they continue to retain the view that only education can secure their future. Parents’ expectations put pressure on students.
This study provides directions for future efforts by all parties involved. Students should try more ways to explore their learning interests and career development. Parents should pay more attention to the inner world of children and strengthen cooperation with teachers and schools. Teachers need more outside support and should treat students with respect and equality. Policymakers should take all voices from students, parents, and teachers into consideration. Colleges and universities should pay attention to college students’ learning motivation, mental and emotional problems, meanwhile encourage students to engage in different activities, students’ organization, campus events and part-time jobs to explore their possibilities.
