dc.description | (information attached to image)Pilgrim's Badge with loops for sewing to clothing. It is of pewter, dates to the late twelfth/early thirteenth century and depicts SS. Peter and Paul, the former holding a very large key, the latter a sword. Found in excavations at High Street, Dublin, 1968. It is of Roman origin and it is on record that Pope Innocent III gave the Canons of St. Peter's the sole right to cast badges of this particular type. Very few badges of this kind have been found in western Europe and the only other example from a datable context was discovered in recent years in excavations of thirteenth century material in the old town of Bergen in Norway.
