Sensory processing difficulties are recognized as a core diagnostic criterion for Autism. These difficulties can vary broadly in topography and have been proposed to impact on many aspects of daily living. Sensory interventions are frequently proposed that target perceived processing difficulties in autism, with the goal of improving people’s abilities to comfortably interact with their environments. Parents of autistic children frequently receive information and recommendations from health and educational professionals in this regard. This chapter covers literature related to this topic addressing the distinctive nature of associated sensory processing difficulties in autistic populations and the potential underlying contributing factors. It emphasizes that despite the distinctive characteristics of this cohort that sensory processing difficulties are unique to an individual and vary temporally and contextually. It also outlines sensory interventions in relation to underlying theory and evidence base and makes recommendations in relation to selecting and implementing sensory interventions guided by clinical practice housed within an evidence-based practice decision making model.
