dc.description.abstract | This thesis is a critical assessment of the regional role of Priniatikos Pyrgos (PP) in Mirabello Bay and Central-East Crete during the Protopalatial period of the Minoan Bronze Age. The chronological range of this study is defined between MM IB and MM IMA. The role of Priniatikos Pyrgos across these regions is attested to by the extent and nature of its on-site activities, and is elucidated by the macroscopic examination of the settlement’s ceramic record. The latter is defined as a case study of diagnostic deposits (Deposits A-F) from across the site. These deposits reveal the extent and cross-period history of on-site occupation, and provide a characterization of its on-site production capabilities, as well as its cultural and aesthetic interests and influences. Through the review of each deposit's respective ceramic materials, the inter- and intra-regional standing of Priniatikos Pyrgos is elucidated with respect to its social, economic, and political dealings and exchanges. The conclusions of this study introduce Priniatikos Pyrgos as an independent settlement actively engaged with the communities of Mirabello Bay and Central-East Crete, with clear instances of material exchange and close cultural ties and appropriation. | |
