ΛΠΗΔ ΗΡΔ: A Greek Radio Drama (Translation)

Abstract

Constrained writing works, and even more specifically lipogrammatic works of literature, are not among the most frequently translated genres, especially into the Greek language. The aim of this paper is to examine how a lipogrammatic work can be translated from an English epistolary novel into a Greek radio drama. Through translating Mark Dunn’s Ella Minnow Pea (2001) and combining these two elements – that of constrained writing and that of radio drama ‒, this paper takes an opportunity to truly explore the potential of language. This dissertation examines the translation of the author’s distinctive writing style – consisting of an archaic vocabulary as well as made-up words –, the translation of the book’s numerous pangrams as well as the process and challenges of transforming the ST from a written work to a radio drama piece suited for sound.
