Abstract:
The Galway Metropolitan Area Transport Strategy (GMATS) will provide a long-term strategic planning framework for the delivery of transport and the integrated development of transport infrastructure and services in the Galway Metropolitan Area (GMA). The GMATS will be developed in line with the existing national, regional and local policy and guidance. The GMA has a dynamic economy, with a fast-growing population and high levels of mobility. This has resulted in high levels of congestion and delays on the road network. Many stakeholders in the Galway area aspire for a step-change in public transport for Galway, which includes the development of light rail in the city. In response, the NTA has identified the requirement for a Light Rail Feasibility Study as one of the key components of the GMATS. The findings from this study will be used to inform the development of the GMATS, alongside recommendations for active travel, bus services, rail, roads and demand management measures.
