This article presents a theoretical exposition of an integrated solution-focused, strengths-based perspective. It does so through a thematic review of literature. The proposition is that solution-focused, strengths-based techniques can offer practitioners useful modes of working with resistance in child protection and welfare service users. The issue of working well with service users who present as resistant to the work, is complex and challenging in child protection and welfare practice. Practitioners must strive for rigorous, humane and compassionate practice, which never distracts from or compromises child safety. A thematic review of literature on solution-focused, strengths-based practice is presented. Therein, relevant theoretical conventions of the approach are set out in four parts. These refer to defining characteristics of solution-focused strengths-based work; techniques and tactics of solution-focused strengths-based work; benefits and criticisms of the integrated, future-orientated approach; and finally, applications of the solution-focused strengths-based approach to leverage constructive, collaborative practice in the face of enduring resistance. Owing to a hypothetical case study, the practical application of the solution-focused, strengths-based approach will be illustrated before concluding. When combined with the practice wisdom of a skilled practitioner, the utmost importance and transformative merit of solutions and strengths, ought not to be under-appreciated.en
