dc.description | 'Valentine Richard Quin was the eldest son of Windham Quin and Frances, daughter of Richard Dawson of Co. Monaghan. He sat as MP for Kilmallock from 1799-1800. He became a British Baronet in 1781 and was raised to the Peerage in 1800 as Baron Adare of Adare. He was created Viscount Adare and Earl of Dunraven and Mountearl in 1822. He had married in 1777 Lady Frances Muriel Fox Strangways, daughter of the 1st Earl of Ilchester, by whom he had four children.
In this portrait is found the exceptional artistic quality and lyricism which invests the portraits of the 1770s. The sitter is shown standing against a plain maroon background, wearing a green coat edged in fur over a gold-braided white waistcoat and breeches. The prominence given to the fur recalls Batoni's early style, but the restless rococo rhythms found there are replaced here by a dignified poise. On the marble-topped console table stands an allegorical statue of Music with a flute, sheet music, writing implements, and several books, including Homer's Odessey and a volume by Plutarch.'
