John Faulkner RHA (1835-1894) Studied at the Royal Dublin Society's School from 1848 and commenced exhibiting at the RHA in 1852. Left Ireland in 1870 "under circumstances which brought about his removal from membership of the Academy" (Strickland, Vol. II, p.340), but returned to exhibiting at the RHA in 1880, continuing to do so until 1887. (Whyte's) Formerly owned by Peter Walker Ltd. Breweries, this major work hung for many years in a Liverpool pub. The landlord recalls it being always kept under glass and that traditionally it was entitled 'Mourning - the Mountains of Mourne'. Originally owned and perhaps commissioned by Liverpool's three times mayor and benefactor, Sir Andrew Barclay Walker, the brewer. [published note - Gorry Gallery]en
