dc.description[Note attached to print of painting in Crookshank Glin archive] This painting is by the same hand as a similar, but unsigned work in the National Gallery of Ireland, catalogued as 'An Irish Tournament, by W.J. Fennell, RHA., Nineteenth Century Irish School'. However, our identification of this artist as John Grenville Fennell would seem more probable. Fennell, born at sea between England and Ireland, became a pupil of Harry Sass (1788-1844). After a period as a comic artist, from which this work dates, he concentrated on landscape painting, exhibiting at Suffolk Street between 1851 and 1874. ['n' in 'Grenville' a possible typo?]en
