He studied at the Royal Academy,the Lambeth School of Art and in Paris, where he was influenced by the rustic realism of Millet and Bastien-Lepage. The present painting is signed and dated 1938 and also signed and inscribed on the reverse. It was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1939, number 44.en
