dc.description | Born in Dublin, Forbes was an artist and member of the Newlyn School of painters. He studied at the Royal Academy, the Lambeth School of Art and in Paris, where he was influenced by the rustic realism of Millet and Bastien-Lepage. The present work is signed and inscribed and possibly done c. 1921 or 1922 upon a visit to the town by the artist. A similar painting depicting the opposite side of the archway was on sale in 1981 along with this one. | en |
