dc.description | 'Born in Rotterdam, of Dutch Huguenot origin; he came to Ireland in 1750 and earned a living as a print-seller and framer, teacher of drawing, and painter of pastel portraits, still life, and landscapes. He was soon involved in the antiquarian movement and was used by such men as William Burton Conyngham and Charles Vallancey to tour the country painting antiquities. His clear, wash watercolours and drawings were used as the basis for engravings in Francis Grose's 'Antiquities of Ireland' (1791) and are now mainly in the Royal Irish Academy and the National Library of Ireland.'
