dc.description'An engraving based on this drawing found in Vol. I of Francis Grose's Antiquities of Ireland (London, 1791) as Pl. 31. The original sketch would have been done on July 29th, 1779, when Bigari was on a tour of Connacht with his artist friend, Gabriel Beranger (ca. 1730-1817), who made a note of this visit in his catalogue notes (see NLI Ms 4162, page 24). The drawing shows an exterior view of the tower-house at Claddagh, near Dunmore, County Galway, Ireland, showing the ground floor entrance recessed between battered walls on either side, and windows of four floors above, and machicolations on the battlement level.'
