Limerick born, Norman Garstin trained at the Academie Royale in Antwerp and then in the atelier of Carolus-Duran in Paris in the early 1880's. He travelled throughout Europe but seems to have enjoyed Brittany in particular. It has been suggested the present painting bears the influence of Garstin's contemporary, Walter Osborne, who painted similar landscapes around Dublin at that time.en
