Limerick born, Norman Garstin trained at the Academie Royale in Antwerp and then in the atelier of Carolus-Duran in Paris in the early 1880s. He travelled throughout Europe but seems to have enjoyed Brittany in particular. The present painting is a sketch painted at Penzance of the artist's daughter, Alethea. Alethea was a pupil of Garstin and later became an artist in her own right.en
