Elvery was a student at the Metropolitan School of Art, Dublin under the tutelage of William Orpen. She was a versatile sculptress, designer and painter associated with An Tur Gloine, the Society of Dublin Painters and the Royal Hibernian Academy. She later married Gordon Campbell, 2nd Baron Glenavy. The present painting bears the influence of 16th century Venetian painting with its delicate glazes of rich color, Arcadian landscape and the ethereal quality of the figures in the background. (Gordon Bowe, 'The Art of Beatrice Elvery, Lady Glenavy (1883-1970), Irish Arts Review Yearbook 1995.) It was exhibited at the R.H.A. annual exhibition in 1933.en
