Limerick born, Norman Garstin trained at the Academie Royale in Antwerp and then in the atelier of Carolus-Duran in Paris in the early 1880s. He travelled throughout Europe but seems to have enjoyed Brittany in particular. The present painting was most likely painted here, possibly at the port of l'Ile Tudy, Cornouaille. The vessel in the picture is a Norwegian Schooner.en
