Abstract:
Tonight I propose to deal with two subjects which seem to be too
large and awkward to fit into a general study of transport yet not
sufficiently large and lacking sufficient data to justify separate studies.
Since they also, I think, illustrate some of the uses and limitations of
statistical methods of a certain kind they seem to be appropriate subjects
to be considered at a meeting of this kind. The subjects I propose to
consider tonight are expenditure on transport as a proportion of the
nation's resources or of its national income, and the question of the
cost of road accidents. Both studies will refer to the Irish situation
but, as I shall try to show, the problems encountered have a general
significance.
