| dc.description | A pair with cgjc2114. Known for his Co. Dublin and Co. Wicklow watercolours, Campbell's oil landscapes are rare. It is intersting to note that a view 'Looking up the Arklow River near the Copper Mines, Co. Wicklow', with Cynthia O'Connor in 1976, is of almost identical size. Peter La Touche, of the famous banking family, acquired Luggala about 1790, and this romantic place with the 'cottage mansion' he built became one of the most celebrated beauty spots described by early 19th century tourists in Ireland. Though the house and folly can still be seen, the rustic bridge referred to by John Ferrar in his 'Tour to Bellevue' in 1796 has long since disappeared. It is also of note that the lancet shaped mouldings at the tops of the windows are now no longer glazed. | en |
