Description:
Robert Carver, a pupil of his father and of Robert West at the Dublin Society Schools, made his reputation as a scene painter in Dublin theatres. Such was his fame that David Garrick invited him to London, where he arrived early in 1769, became eminently successful and remained until his death in 1791. Carver's career as a landscape painter took a parallel course; despite showing twenty paintings at the Dublin Society of Artists between 1765 and 1768, real appreciation of his ability lay in London, where he was elected President of the Incorporated Society of Artists in 1778. This painting is one of Carvers few works to be signed in full and hence aids proper attribution of other Irish eighteenth century landscapes signed R.C. - initials signed by three artists!Role:
