Abstract:
Certain modifications were made in 1955 in the system of recording births in this country, with a view to extending the amount of statistical information available and bringing the Irish statistics on the subject
into line with United Nations recommendations. Although the particulars to be entered in the Register of Births remain unchanged, the Central Statistics Office now receives from the District Registrars a form in respect of each birth, containing such additional information as date of birth of mother, date of marriage, and number of previous children. Thus it became possible for the first time in 1955 to prepare, for the whole country, classifications of births by such factors as age of mother at maternity, duration of marriage and order of birth and these are being published in The Report on Vital Statistics for the year 1955.
