Arbitration may perhaps be defined as the mode of settling disputes and adjusting difficulties by other tribunals than the ordinary law courts of a country. It would not serve any useful purpose to inquire into its origin, it is probably as old as commerce and trade. It is so natural that merchants and traders should have their own tribunals conversant with their particular usages, that it does not seem to have occurred to Governments generally to interfere with them up to quite modern times.en
