The incidence of male non-employment in Ireland

Abstract

This paper presents an analysis of male economic activity ? employment, unemployment and non-participation using micro data from the 1993 Labour Force Survey. The main characteristics that contribute to bad labour market outcomes are residence in large cities or towns, the presence of many young children, living in Local Authority rented accommodation and the presence of other unemployed or inactive adults in the household. We also examine the incidence of reported signing on to the Live Register among the unemployed and inactive. Finally, we explore the factors associated with whether a man who regarded his principal economic status as "unemployed" would meet the ILO criteria of unemployment ? principally, active job search.
