Abstract:
This paper offers the first extensive analysis of the extent of change, in both structure and labour market, occurring within the Irish media since the early 1980s. It chronicles change from a "sector" dominated by the public broadcaster and informed by universal, creative and service values to a multi-faceted "industry" defined and influenced by the processes of production and exchange. This evolution is sited within a broader discussion of Irish development policy and the opportunity posed by new digital technologies. Changes in broadcasting policy, and the structure and labour force of the new cultural industry are examined in depth.
