dc.description.abstract | The economic and social consequences of a population's age structure are far-reaching. The proportion of a country's population in the active age groups largely determines the relationship between productivity per worker and income per person. The ability of a society to provide the health, educational and recreational facilities needed by young and old people is affected by the ratio ofactive to dependent people in the population. Changes in the population's age structure are of considerable significance for the level o f demand for numerous consumers' durable goods, and may have wide repercussions on the cyclical behaviour of GNP, as has been argued by Easterlin. | |
