Isoquinolines are naturally occurring alkaloids, some of which have pharmacological activity. Previous work by the research group of Dr. Mary Jane Meegan, has shown diverse classes of isoquinoline derivatives to be active against monoamine oxidase and acetylcholinesterase. This provided pointers to structure-activity relationships, leading to the syntheses undertaken in this study. Chapter One discusses current theories on the aetiology of depression, Parkinson’s Disease and Alzheimer’s Disease. Current clinical treatments are outlined, and the possible roles of monoamine oxidase and acetylcholinesterase inhibitors are placed in context. The current understanding of the structure of monoamine oxidase is summarised. The rationale for work to be undertaken is then presented.
