This is the second lecture in the course Freshwater Hydrobiology which explores the effects of physical factors on the creation of habitats and their associated communities in freshwater. This is a PowerPoint lecture which is free to use and modify. It was designed to be used in conjunction with the course text Gray, N.F. (2017) Water Science and Technology: An Introduction, published by CRC Press, Oxford. In the lecture, the following are explored: natural dispersion of species, biotic factors, abiotic factors, water chemistry, river flow, discharge rate, current velocity, shear stress, Froude number, Velocity:depth ratio, Lotic-invertebrate Index for Flow Evaluation (LIFE).
