This Design and Dignity Baseline Review serves a number of functions. It provides an overview of the physical environment of most of the acute and a sample of the community hospitals participating in the programme. It will be a useful guide to action for Working Groups established under the direction of Hospital Standing Committees on Dying, Death and Bereavement. It will inform the work of the Standards Development Team which will shortly consult on design guidelines regarding the physical environment as it relates to end-of-life issues. Finally, it will support the process of evaluation of the programme.en
