Body schema plasticity demonstrates the extent of the malleabihty of sensory maps in the adult brain. Alterations of body schema in clinical populations such as the appearance of phantom limbs after amputation and somatoparaphrenia after stroke are well documented. This body of work demonstrates that the body schema can be greatly modified even in neurologically healthy adults.
