Abstract:
The research project described in this Ph.D. thesis can be divided into
two parts. The first, consisting in the description of a new instrument, the low
temperature tunneling device (LTTD), designed and built in order to measure
the deformation of Fe3O4/MgO thin films when cooled down through the Verwey
transition. In the second part. Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), low energy
electron diffraction (LEED), scanning tunneling microscopy-spectroscopy (STMSTS)
have been used to characterise the surface reconstruction of Fe3O4 (110) in
the case of single crystal and of two thin films deposited on MgO substrate.
