The aims, objectives, expectations and outcomes of Catholic schools in Imo State, Nigeria The Catholic Church in Nigeria, like in other countries, operates Catholic schools. Catholic missionaries introduced Catholic education in Nigeria in the 1840s. Following its introduction, Catholic schools were built. The main aim of the schools was the evangelisation and propagation of the Catholic faith. From 1840-1970 the Catholic Church managed the schools. However, in 1970 the government whose interest in education had grown over the years confiscated the schools. The confiscation of the schools was opposed by the Catholic Church, which has continued to demand their return by the government. However, while negotiations with the government are going on, the Catholic Church continues to build new schools. An important issue regarding these schools is that there has not been sufficient research on the aims, objectives, expectations and outcomes of these new schools.
