The nickel-base superalloy Inconel 718, a tough material capable of maintaining its strength at high temperatures and resisting corrosion in various environments, can be classified as a "difficult to machine" material. Yet despite advances in near net shape casting, forging and powder metallurgy, machining still plays a major role in the manufacture of aircraft gas turbine engines. Traditional machining techniques are still used, since the metal removal rates are higher than those of non-traditional techniques.
