This thesis is primarily concerned with the development and testing of various models explaining the magnetic properties of semiconducting oxides doped with highly dilute concentrations of a magnetic impurity. Taking ZnO:Co as the prototypical material, the Monte Carlo method is extensively employed to test the feasibility and to examine the likelihood of these models explaining the unexpected experimental detection of room temperature ferromagnetism in these materials.
