This thesis is a collection of three separate essays. We examine how a small open economy adjusts to a number of challenges posed by globalisation. We also analyse the effect of employment constraints on an economy's ability to adjust to shocks, which can emanate from changes in the international or national economic environment. Our analysis is primarily focused on the Irish economy, which is one of the most globalised economies in the world. We utilise a number of analytical approaches in the thesis, including case study analysis and econometric analysis.
