Description:
May 25, 2018 was an historic day across the EU with the application of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and in Ireland with the commencement of the Data Protection Act 2018 and the establishment of a new Data Protection Commission. This new legal framework has brought about a transformative change in data protection regulation, strengthening the responsibilities of organisations when processing personal data and enhancing the data protection rights of individuals. Since 25 May 2018, in accordance with this new legislation, the DPC is no longer a data protection authority with a purely national focus; it has become a supervisory authority with an EU-wide remit, responsible for protecting the data privacy rights of millions of individuals across the EU. This is the first annual report of the new DPC. It has been prepared in accordance with Section 24 of the Data Protection Act 2018 and covers the period from 25 May to 31 December 2018.
