There is a requirement for research engaging with the structural evolution of whole industries. This research focuses on exploring how digital information and communications technology (ICT) has influenced industry evolution in the Irish advertising and retail grocery industries. The application of ICT has become endemic across industries and has had significant impact. Engaging with ICT, has become a necessity and a key strategic consideration for firms. As a general purpose technology ICT offers a particularly interesting lens to explore industry evolution. In the information systems (IS) literature industry level research is rare, and most research focuses on a specific ICT solution. This research engages with the full structural evolution of industries, augments industry level research in IS, and addresses ICT as a class of technology.en
