The challenges faced by schools in recent years in recruiting teachers have been well publicised by various stakeholders in the education sector. In developing formal structures to address the issues and develop appropriate responses, the Department has worked in collaboration with a range of education partners including higher education institutions (HEIs), school management bodies, the Teaching Council and the Higher Education Authority (HEA) and has consulted extensively with the teacher unions as well as with other stakeholders. This inter-agency and consultative approach is reflected in the composition of the various working groups which have been established to consider the multifaceted elements that impact on teacher supply and has led to the development of the Teacher Supply Action Plan, which includes a range of actions for a variety of stakeholders as well as for the Department. This Data Report, which is the product of one of the collaborative inter-agency groups, the Data Working Group, is a working document intended to form the basis for further discussion and consultation between the Department and relevant agencies and education partners.en
