dc.description | The European Union operates a system of controls on the export of sensitive
items from the member states. These controls form part of a global framework
designed to prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, to preserve
regional stability and to protect human rights. The Department of Business,
Enterprise and Innovation is the national competent authority with responsibility
for administering and enforcing these controls in Ireland.
A breach of controls would constitute a serious offence and could result in the
guilty party being liable to a fine or imprisonment. In addition, the reputational
damage incurred by the exporter and Ireland as a result of a breach would be
substantial.
The Department of Business, Enterprise and Innovation has prepared this
introductory guide to assist exporters in understanding export controls and their
obligations under relevant EU and national legislation. | en |
