Abstract:
This dissertation presents an analysis of teacher professional and language development
in Irish-medium second-level education in Ireland. In particular, the study examines the challenges which face teachers in this setting along with their professional and language development needs and how school leadership can support them in their continuing professional development. The study employed a qualitative methodological approach, using interviews with school principals in Irish-medium second level schools to gather data as part of a small-scale exploratory study. Results indicate that significant challenges to teaching in Irish-medium second-level schools exist. These include challenges in terms of resources for the Irish-medium sector; linguistic challenges facing teachers and students; and teacher supply issues. A fragmented approach to continuing professional development in the Irish-medium second-level setting was also identified, with issues in terms of focus, structure and investment in continuing professional development practices coming to the fore. Drawing on findings of previous research along with the data gathered for this study presents various opportunities for the expansion of professional development in the sector. The findings of this study present a timely perspective on the current situation in relation to teacher professional development for the Irish-medium second-level sector and the recommendations which are made provide possible implications for future policy and practice.
