This thesis reports the design, synthesis, characterisation and biological evaluation of novel dihydropyridines, tetrahydropyrimidines and structurally related compounds. Therapeutically used as calcium channel blockers (CCBs), 1,4-dihydropyridines are under investigation for antiproliferative effects and potential ability to overcome multidrug resistance (MDR). The expanding interest in the 1,4-dihydropyridine (DHP) and related tetrahydropyrimidine (THP) family is evident from the extensive research and studies perfonned in the area. A review of the literature presents a number of potential uses for DHPs and THPs and focus is placed on their potential as anti-cancer agents in this thesis (Chapterl).
