The Serum Amyloid A (S AA) proteins are a family of highly conserved lipoproteins secreted by the liver. Their production and release is massively induced under conditions of inflammation or infection by pro-inflammatory cytokines such as Interleukin-1 (IL-1), Interleukin-6 (IL-6) and Tumour Necrosis Factor-α (TNF-α) and by bacterial endotoxins.
