The origin of structural distortions in metal ceramics

Abstract

Ceramics containing Pb, Sn, Bi, Hg and T1 metals represent a class of materials with numerous technologically relevant current and potential applications. Despite the large quantity of experimental and theoretical efforts made over the past century, a number of key issues remain unanswered, relating to the basic chemical understanding of these materials.
