The measurement of mechanical properties of nano-scale materials is paramount for their safe and efficient incorporation into devices. Techniques to perform these measurements are reviewed here with a particular interest on one-dimensional systems. Following a technique developed in our lab we study the mechanical properties of germanium nanowires and polymer-carbon nanotubes composites.
